Kindergarten Sight Words
The following Kindergarten Sight words (also known as word wall words - www) are words that are commonly found in story books, poems and informational texts that are read in the classroom. They are words that we frequently use in our Kindergarten classroom messages, shared reading/writing activities, guided reading/writing activities and journals.
The purpose of studying these words are to help students build a sight word vocabulary and make the task of reading and comprehension easier. Students are encouraged to sound out the letters one by one (i.e. pulling apart like bubble gum and then snapping them back together quickly) until they have mastered the word.
Below are word lists that will assist students to develop, master and prepare themselves for reading and writing. Most children are working from List A and B.

ACTIVITIES TO HELP YOUR CHILD LEARN THEIR SIGHT WORDS
- Place sight words on the floor in a pathway and have your child jump onto each word and say it. Make the pathway to a couch and snuggle up and read
- Using water and a brush "paint" the words on the sidewalk
- Find words when you are at the grocery store, bank, restaurants, museums and newsprint just to name a few
- Get a container filled with sand and use a pencil to write out words
- Have a game of memory word wall words (making two copies of words and find the matching pair)
- Use play dough to form letters and words
- Use magnets on the fridge, cookie sheet or metal cookie container
- Use blocks with letters on them
- Use a highlighter to find these words in the newspaper
Once they have learned some sight words have them work towards creating simple sentences with the words they know and sound out words they do not know.
